Pest Control: What to Know About Keeping Critters Out

By Ella Holt

With spring coming at the end of the month, hopefully nicer weather is right around the corner. However, warmer temperatures may bring about unwanted pests in the home. It’s important to stay on top of pest control now, that way you’re not dealing with pesky ants or rodents in the height of summer fun.

We sat down with Danny Williams of Newt’s Pest Control to gain a better understanding of what matters when it comes to pest control and choosing the right company for you.

The Background of Newt’s Pest Control

Williams’ passion for his pest control company started about a decade ago. Williams had his first experience with New Town when he had to bring his daughter, Kayla, dinner at her job, which was in the area. He and his wife, Brenda, really liked the town, and within a month they had staged their house and decided to rent in New Town to see if they liked it. The two have lived here ever since.

Early on, Williams was approached by someone who owned a local pest control company and wanted to sell it. He initially wasn’t interested, and getting a license in pest control isn’t an easy process. He also had been selling cars for 10 years, so it would be a huge change. But he found a way to get the license, and eventually bought the business.

“I'm so glad I did it,” Williams said. “I mean, I changed my whole life. This community changed my life.”

Williams has owned the business for about a decade and still serves some clients that have been with him from the very beginning. One of his first jobs in New Town was treating a local brown recluse problem, and he gained traction from there with word-of-mouth referrals.

“I just try to do good work. I haven't upped my prices in 10 years,” he said.

It’s important to Williams to support the local community in the same way that it’s supported him. He has donated to organizations like the New Town Men’s Club and football programs at Orchard Farm. He also cares deeply about helping others in the community.

“I had a rough childhood and I don't like seeing any kids suffer. I mean, none, zero. I will always help kids,” he said.

Williams’ experience in pest control, as well as living in the community, helps him approach his work in a very personal way. He enjoys talking with homeowners and getting to know his clients. He also makes a point to learn about each customer’s house and their specific pest problems.

“I know which houses have the ant issues and I'll go put an ant product around the house instead of a spider product,” Williams said.

Williams advises homeowners to have their houses treated for pests quarterly, as once-a-year treatments may not last the entire year.

“And if you do ever have an ant in between visits, I tell people I'll come take care of it that day. No charge. You don't get charged for it,” Williams said.

He also noted that homeowners may have pest issues they don’t even realize exist.

“There's more rodents around here than you ever would think,” Williams said. He often notices signs of rodents and points out mouse holes that homeowners didn’t even know were there.

With spring approaching, now is the time to keep up with quarterly pest maintenance so you can stop infestations before they start. As temperatures warm up, April and May are also the best time to begin mosquito treatments so you can enjoy your summer worry-free.
