From GlenMark Farms to Shire Lane Estate: Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future
On the evening of February 21, GlenMark Farms was filled with friends and neighbors gathered to celebrate Glenda and Mark Ell as they begin a well-earned transition into retirement. It wasn’t a farewell so much as a tribute—a recognition of the fourteen years they have spent stewarding one of New Town’s most recognizable and beloved properties.
For many of us, the farm has never been just a venue. It has been a backdrop for weddings, holiday gatherings, fundraisers, and milestone celebrations. Under Glenda and Mark’s care, the farm became a place where agriculture and hospitality met, where families built traditions and where community felt real and present.
Now, the property is entering a new chapter. This February, my wife Trish and I purchased the eight-acre farm and have reimagined it under a new name: Shire Lane Estate.
A Familiar Place, A Long-Considered Opportunity
This farm has always been part of our daily lives. Trish and I have lived in New Town for 18 years, in two different homes within 500 feet of the farm. We moved into the neighborhood with Roxy as a two-year-old and three months before our youngest, Everett, was born. We’ve driven by this property thousands of times. It feels like part of the fabric of our family’s story.
Last July, Glenda approached me about the future of the farm. She shared that she was considering listing it if we weren’t interested. Trish and I took time to reflect carefully. By September, we reconnected with clarity and conviction about what stepping into this responsibility could mean.
Owning this farm has always been my wife’s dream. For us, the opportunity is not simply about acquiring property, it’s about preserving a legacy while thoughtfully guiding its next chapter. We see this as a long-term commitment to something much bigger than ourselves.
Preserving the Heart, Expanding the Vision
While the name is new, our intention is not to erase the past. We see ourselves as stewards of GlenMark’s history and of the original civic vision the New Town Founder and Town Architect had for this space as a place where community could gather, learn, and grow.
At The Commons, our philosophy has always been to holistically elevate the community. When we reimagined New Town Fitness Center as Commons Fitness, we focused on strengthening community, improving the experience, and building operational excellence. In a year and a half, gym membership has tripled because we took it from a convenient place to a community place through investing in people and equipment.
Many traditions will continue at the “farm,” a name that locals are destined to continue to use. Seasonal events, including the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration on March 17, remain on the calendar. The pastoral charm, the open space, and the spirit of gathering will remain intact. And yes, while the estate is evolving, we may even bring back a small collection of farm animals in the future as a nod to the property’s agricultural roots.
Our vision is to transition the site from an agricultural and event barn into a year-round experiential destination designed to attract regional weddings, retreats, festivals, leadership intensives, and curated gatherings. The goal is not simply to host events, but to create immersive, meaningful experiences.
We want to create an environment where commerce, celebration, and community intersect. When families celebrate milestones here, when companies host retreats here, when organizations gather here, that generates real local economic impact and strengthens the social fabric of our town.
A Phased Redevelopment Plan
The evolution of Shire Lane Estate will unfold thoughtfully and in phases.
Initial improvements will focus on enhancing the existing 2,100-square-foot event hall, elevating its aesthetic and functionality while preserving its character. The 1,500-square-foot glass greenhouse will be positioned to expand seasonal flexibility—creating a botanical, light-filled space that can host ceremonies and gatherings year-round.
Additional enhancements under consideration include dedicated bridal and groom suites, improved on-site preparation spaces, and utilizing the farmhouse for guest accommodations. Longer term, selective lodging additions could support multi-day retreats and wedding weekends—positioning Shire Lane Estate as a destination rather than a single-day venue.
Looking further ahead, we are exploring the transformation of the 5,760-square-foot organic greenhouse into a premier conservatory-style venue. The intent would be to preserve its horticultural purpose while elevating it into a dramatic setting for ceremonies, banquets, and large gatherings surrounded by living greenery.
For us, the emphasis is not just on scale, but on experience. With the acreage and structures already in place, there is a rare opportunity to create something truly special without losing the character people love.
A Destination Close to Home
One of the most compelling aspects of this property is that it allows people to feel transported without leaving the community. Couples can host elegant destination-style weddings without asking guests to travel hours away. Leadership teams can hold focused retreats close to home. Families can gather for meaningful celebrations in a setting that feels both refined and grounded.
The estate has the potential to serve multiple audiences—brides and grooms, entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, corporate teams, and families seeking a memorable backdrop for life’s milestones.
For me, it ultimately comes down to this: creating a place where people can slow down, gather intentionally, and experience something meaningful.
Community Ownership and Shared Impact
An important part of our broader vision involves community participation. In the coming months, The Commons brand intends to launch an equity crowdfunding initiative that would allow local residents to invest directly in real estate assets they see and use every day—including Shire Lane Estate.
The idea is simple but powerful: align local ownership with local impact. Rather than outside capital shaping the direction of community assets, neighbors would have the opportunity to participate in their growth and success.
When people celebrate here, retreat here, and invest here, the ripple effects extend throughout the local economy. Our hope is that Shire Lane Estate becomes something the community doesn’t just use—but feels connected to.
A Thoughtful Transition
As GlenMark Farms transitions into Shire Lane Estate, what remains constant is the spirit of gathering. The land remains. The barns and greenhouses remain. The sense of welcome remains.
What changes is the horizon.
For Glenda and Mark, February marked a milestone—a moment to reflect on years of faithful stewardship. For our family, it marks the beginning of a responsibility we take seriously.
In the seasons ahead, the estate will continue to host laughter, vows, music, and shared meals under its barns and glass structures. It will carry forward the traditions that made it special while expanding into new possibilities that serve our growing community.
For a property long woven into the fabric of New Town, this next chapter is not a departure.
It is an expansion.
