There is a specific kind of magic in the way the limestone bluffs tower over the Mississippi River in Grafton. They are ancient, steadfast, and soon, they will serve as the backdrop for one of the most ambitious veteran tributes in the country.

Since December 2022, the Grafton Veteran’s Commission has been working tirelessly on a singular mission: to honor those who served through the creation of a first-class Veteran’s Memorial Complex. This June, Grafton invites you to witness the beginning of a vision that bridges the gap between the American Midwest and the shores of Normandy.
A Vision Set in Stone
The centerpiece of the National Memorial of Military Ascent (NMMA) is nothing short of breathtaking. Utilizing the natural geography of the Grafton riverfront, the memorial will feature a life-sized WWII reproduction of the U.S. Army Rangers climbing the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc.
Bronze Rangers will be positioned along the bluffs, forever captured in the harrowing ascent they endured during the D-Day landings. This isn't just a statue; it’s a visceral reminder of the grit and sacrifice required to secure the world's freedom.

More Than a Monument: The Museum Experience
Adjacent to the Visitor’s Center, the complex will include the Edward Amburg History Museum. This isn't your standard "look-but-don't-touch" exhibit. Plans include an interactive experience room where visitors can truly feel the weight of history. Through immersive sights, sounds and motion, you will be transported to Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, experiencing the urgency and danger faced by the Rangers firsthand.

"The NMMA will serve as a place of solemn reflection where visitors can come to learn about, honor, and never forget the sacrifices of the military men and women who served our country."
Looking Forward
While the NMMA is expected to be fully realized within the next four years, the journey begins now. The Memorial aims to foster a patriotic perspective that connects our local history to world events past, present, and future.
